Poonam Pandey: Stripping her way to fame

The Kingfisher model Poonam Pandey has done a commendable job of being in limelight in spite of not landing any prime role on either television or films. She sure knows how to use the social media to get attention.

Poonam Pandey was earlier known as a model featuring in Kingfisher annual calendar. The calendar sponsored by the very flamboyant Vijay Mallya’s group United Breweries has been covered extensively by the Indian media. Featuring in the calendar made sure that a model gets noticed by the media.

Poonam Pandey was not happy just being a model. She came to the attention of the Indian national media when she announced that she would strip for the Indian team if it won the Cricket World Cup 2011. Interestingly, the announcement was not made on the national press, but through social media. National media picked up the story from the social media and Poonam got press coverage worth millions of dollars for free.

She became a household name with her announcement. Some right-wing organizations protested against her “anti-Indian” action. Some “fans” of her encouraged her to do so.

The Indian cricket team won the world cup. Now Ponam Pandey was not anywhere to be seen. She did not strip, disappointing her “fans.” Later she claimed that the BCCI did not permit her to strip in front of cricket players. It was a big time stunt pulled on the national media by the young model.

Poonam Pandey managed her profile on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter to interact with her “fans.” She got a great following post her strip announcement. She kept her followers hooked to her by occasionally posting her bikini or semi-nude pictures. One such picture on Holi was noticed even by national media.

A year later Poonam Pandey posted a nude picture of her on her Twitter account, claiming to have stripped for the IPL winning Kolkata Knight Riders. Some people claimed that it was a morphed image.

Poonam Pandey has a staff of around 7-8 people full time promoting her on social media. She has managed an excellent record of PR activities too. Sources claim that she earns money through advertising on her website, public appearances (she changes Rs. 3 lakh for one appearance) and mostly though royalty paid by mobile companies for using her name for chatting with consumers.

Mr. Mallya and all the banks which lent him the money should be penalized severely. The money lent by the banks belongs to the public and the banks should explain why a crook was lent such huge amounts.
